Fifty years ago, our food was fresh for days, even weeks without all the chemicals now used. Why mess even more with trying to keep it 'fresh' as reported here?

I am not keen on food being messed about with to keep it longer. I personally am against gm food, and irradiation of food too. Is it purely for preserving it, or for greedy supermarkets to keep it longer? If food is brought fresh, there is no need for it to have to be made to last longer. Who wants to have it last weeks. Careful buying, and using what we need, and freezing the rest,I feel is enough. It will still be altered food, and although I can see the reason behind this process, all this fiddling with food, and altering it, has great implications on how it is altered and the effect on our bodies too. All of which I am sure will be denied in favour of the words....IT IS SAFE. I will grow mine, or buy it fresh from the markets .
