My daughter gave us a planter for outdoors w/ basil, thyme, etc. in it. I'd really like one indoors now.

My tip for Growing Basil Indoors is to buy one of those potted plants that are sold for cooking, cramped into a tiny plastic planter. They're already fully grown, and usually consist of several plants in the planter.
Give your basil a day of two to settle in on your window sill. Then plant it out into a larger pot with good potting compost in it, having given it a good watering before you start.
Before you fill up with soil spread the roots out a bit by digging your two thumbs into the root ball and spreading it out with as little disturbance as possible so the the new compost can get into the middle of the root ball and carry nutrients to all the roots.
[Don't actually separate the basil plants individually. Most likely they will die if you do! ]
Fill up with soil and then water the pot.
Pinch out the growing tips, so the the plants will branch out with new growth, rather than running to seed.
You can see mine above was planted out a few days ago and already it's starting to perk up!
That will last you for ages, definitely much longer than what you originally bought in the store. Just don't let the soil completely dry out, but don't over-water, either! ;D
